The Hunger Games!

This week we started reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  After reading the first few chapters, we decided to take a closer look at how the author introduces each of the main characters.  The students worked in groups to focus on one of the characters.  Then we used a very fun website, www.tagxedo.com and www.wordle.net to create word clouds and presented them to the class.  The students all did a fabulous jobs analyzing how Suzanna Collins introduced the main characters.  Below are some of the word clouds the students created. Feel free to check them out!

Websites

First graders,

I would love to learn about any of your favorite websites that you visit with your parents at home.  Maybe we can add them to our website or spend time visiting them during computer time.

To answer, just click on the picture of a pencil!

Do you know any great websites for first grade students that may be beneficial to include on this blog? Instead of a section with links to individual websites, would it be better to include one link to my social bookmarking site? http://delicious.com/msbartley

Helpful Links!

First graders love to visit Starfall during computer time.  Starfall's learn to read with phonics website has many different activities for students learning how to read and write.  It also has many different interactive storybooks for kids and parents to read together.  Enjoy!

Spelling City is a great way to practice your spelling and vocabulary words each week.  Start by entering your words for the week and the website Spelling City will show you different games and activities you can play with your words.  It makes learning how to spell fun!

Discovery Kids is a great website for those first graders who love to read non-fiction.  The website includes puzzles and games as well as a "Tell Me More!" section where kids can explore space, nature, and any questions they might have about the world they live in.

Welcome!

Welcome to the blog site for Ms. Bartley's first grade class! My name is Ms. Bartley and I am so excited for our first day together and to meet every single one of you!  I hope you all had a fun and restful summer vacation.  We are going to spend a lot of time over the first few days getting to know each other.  I cannot wait to learn ALL about you, but first let me tell you a little about myself.

I was born in New York but moved to Connecticut when I was five.  I have a younger sister named Alexandra who I love very much.  When I graduated from high school I moved to Maryland to attend the University of Maryland, Go Terps!  I went to school to learn how to be a teacher and now I attend Fordham University so that I can learn even more!

A few of my favorite things:
Favorite Color: Pink
Favorite Season: Spring
Favorite Food: Pasta
Favorite Sport: Baseball
Favorite Animal: Dog

This year we will spend a lot of time learning how to read and write.  We will be reading together every day and I cannot wait to show you all of the books in our classroom library!  In math, we will learn how to tell time, count money, and measure with rulers.  We will also become scientists to learn all about the weather, plants, and animals.  Our first field trip will be to the Beardsley Zoo.

Together we will use this blog to share with your family all of the fun and exciting things we will be learning together this year.  I cannot wait to meet all of you!

Sincerely,

Ms. Bartley
